A simple change to flour can prevent iron-deficiency anaemia. Fortify Health makes it possible. Wheat flour is consumed daily by hundreds of millions of people across India, making it the ideal vehicle for preventing anaemia and other vitamin deficiencies at scale.

Implementation

Our Implementation division partners with wheat flour mills across India, providing the equipment, premix and training they need to fortify their flour in line with FSSAI standards. The team also runs our quality assurance and monitoring systems, ensuring every partner mill produces fortified flour that is safe, consistent and cost-effective at scale.

Fortify Health began in 2017 with a simple question: what is the most cost-effective way to improve public health at scale?

The answer, after rigorous research and extensive conversations with nutrition experts, pointed clearly to one intervention: wheat flour fortification to address anaemia in India.

With founding support from Charity Entrepreneurship and an initial incubation grant from GiveWell, we built our first programmes in Maharashtra and West Bengal in 2018. By 2022, we had proven the model worked, and secured an $8.2 million grant from GiveWell to scale it.

Since then, Fortify Health has secured additional funding from GiveWell, Coefficient Giving, and Founder’s Pledge, as well as recognition and support from Giving What We Can, The Mulago Foundation, and Rippleworks.

This support has allowed us to scale to over 300 mill partners across 16 states, with our partners’ fortified flour reaching approximately 20 million people every month (as of 2026).

Today we’re asking a new question: how do we make fortified flour so ingrained in India’s food system that we’re no longer needed?

Our focus now turns to scale. The next chapter of our work centres on deeper engagement with government to fortify the flour distributed through schemes such as the Public Distribution System and PM POSHAN, which already reach over 400 million people every day.

By 2030, we expect to fortify 60% of India’s packaged wheat flour, reach over 100 million people directly, and avert more than 250,000 years lived with anaemia annually.

Beyond that, our ambition is to reach all 600 million people in India who regularly consume wheat flour, and to help make iron deficiency anaemia a problem of the past.
