Frequently Asked Questions
India has one of the highest burdens of anaemia in the world. According to the National Family Health Survey-5 (NFHS-5, 2019–21), 67.1% of children aged 6 to 59 months and 57% of women aged 15 to 49 are anaemic. Among pregnant women specifically, the figure is 52.2%.
Studies have shown a clear connection between micronutrient deficiencies, particularly iron and vitamin B deficiencies, and the high rates of anaemia in India (Ghosh et al., 2019). Iron deficiency anaemia is the most common form of anaemia in India and globally (WHO).
The economic cost is significant. NITI Aayog estimates that anaemia reduces India’s GDP by 1.18% annually, equivalent to around $25 billion.
